Job Description
The SUE Technician supports a Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) field crew by identifying, mapping, and documenting underground utilities using records research, geophysical tools, excavation methods, and advanced survey techniques. This role focuses on the safe and efficient operation of SUE field equipment to locate utilities accurately and to provide high-quality data to the SUE Analyst and project teams.
Responsibilities
- Assist the SUE Analyst in the daily operation of a SUE field crew to identify, map, and document underground utilities.
- Develop and apply learned skills in the safe operation of SUE field equipment, including ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic designating equipment, sewer cameras, probe rods, jackhammers, chop saws, pneumatic tampers, and vacuum excavation equipment.
- Conduct subsurface utility engineering and utility locating activities using geophysical tools and excavation methods.
- Perform surveying and land surveying tasks as needed to support accurate utility mapping and documentation.
- Exercise extreme caution when working near or around any utility facility and strictly follow all job site safety parameters.
- Assist with routine maintenance and care of vehicles, equipment, and work sites to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety standards at all times.
- Walk and work outdoors for extended periods in various terrains and weather conditions while performing field duties.
- Travel daily within the designated service area and occasionally stay overnight for out-of-town projects.
- Work 50+ hours during busy periods to meet project deadlines and client requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support project and team needs.
- Work independently and unsupervised when required, maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
- Specialized training from a vocational or technical school or a minimum of 2 years of experience as a SUE Technician 1.
- Proficiency with survey equipment such as total stations and GPS, SUE locating equipment, or hydrographic equipment.
- Experience or ability to perform surveying, land surveying, excavation, and subsurface utility engineering tasks.
- Ability to safely operate ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic locating equipment, sewer cameras, probe rods, jackhammers, chop saws, pneumatic tampers, and vacuum excavation equipment (or willingness to be trained).
- Ability to walk outdoors for long periods through urban, suburban, and rural terrain, including hills, swamps, high traffic areas, and other challenging environments.
- Ability to work under adverse conditions, including extreme heat and cold, exposure to wildlife and insects, and year-round outdoor conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and carry and operate field equipment as needed.
- Ability to travel daily within the Sarasota area and occasionally stay overnight for projects.
- Ability to work 50+ hours during busy periods when project demands require.
- Capability to work unsupervised when required while maintaining productivity and safety.
- Proficient technical skills with a process-oriented and detail-focused approach.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities to interpret field conditions and utility data accurately.

- Ability to pass background and motor vehicle checks and pre-employment drug screening, as required for employment.
- Ability to meet any required background standards for work in sensitive facilities, including nuclear sites, if applicable.
- Experience as a SUE Technician or in a related utility locating or surveying role is welcomed, and training is available for candidates with strong potential.
- Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.

This position is 100% field-based and requires extensive outdoor work year-round. You will travel daily to job sites across the Sarasota area and throughout the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, and surrounding regions. The work involves a significant amount of walking over varied terrain, including urban streets, suburban neighborhoods, rural areas, hills, swamps, and high-traffic zones, often in extreme heat and cold and in the presence of wildlife and insects. You will regularly use specialized field technologies such as ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic locating equipment, sewer cameras, total stations, GPS, and vacuum excavation equipment. The role may require occasional overnight travel and workweeks exceeding 50 hours during busy periods. This is a Contract position based out of Greenville, SC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
