Job Title: Pipe Foreman
Job Description
This role leads a heavy equipment and pipe-laying crew on civil construction projects with a strong focus on storm drainage systems. The Pipe Foreman organizes daily work, operates heavy equipment at an expert level, and ensures projects progress safely, efficiently, and in line with plans and specifications. This position suits a hands-on leader with outstanding heavy equipment operation experience and proven crew leadership, even without prior superintendent experience.
Responsibilities
- Organize and lead a pipe and heavy equipment crew in a safe, efficient, and productive manner on civil construction sites.
- Track daily production, document work performed, and complete all required paperwork accurately and on time.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe job site that complies with company safety standards and procedures.
- Lead by example in the field, demonstrating best practices and actively teaching and mentoring crew members.
- Communicate clear production goals to the crew and hold team members accountable for meeting those goals.
- Work closely with the Site Superintendent to coordinate work, address issues, and support overall project objectives.
- Follow all company policies, procedures, and safety guidelines consistently.
- Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications to guide layout and installation of storm drainage pipe and related work.
- Oversee and participate in the installation of storm drainage pipe and associated stormwater and drainage systems.
- Operate multiple types of heavy equipment, including dozers, track hoes, graders, excavators, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, and front-end loaders, at an expert level as needed for production.
- Use GPS systems such as Trimble or TopCon to assist with grading, excavation, and layout.
- Coordinate excavation and pipe laying activities to meet project deadlines and completion dates.
- Monitor work quality and ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
- Promote strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal collaboration within the crew.
- Adapt to changing site conditions and weather while maintaining productivity and safety.
Essential Skills
- At least 5 years of experience managing a heavy equipment operating crew in a construction or civil environment.
- Proven ability to lead a crew effectively, demonstrating strong leadership and accountability.
- Extensive hands-on heavy equipment operation skills, including dozer, track hoe, and grader operation at the highest level.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, and specifications.
- Experience working specifically with storm drainage pipe, stormwater systems, and drainage installations.
- Heavy equipment operation experience with excavators, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, front-end loaders, and track hoes.
- Working knowledge of GPS systems, specifically Trimble and/or TopCon, for grading and excavation.
- Strong construction management understanding related to civil, excavation, and pipe-laying operations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to lead, train, and motivate crew members.
- Ability to follow and enforce company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold and extreme heat.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) experience at an advanced level, including the ability to run multiple pieces of equipment confidently.
- Experience in civil construction, excavation, and pipe laying on storm drain and stormwater projects.
- Familiarity with construction management practices and coordination with site supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a clean and organized job site.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing site conditions and project needs.
- Experience using GPS-guided equipment and layout tools on site.
- Leadership experience in the field, even without formal superintendent experience, with clear evidence of taking initiative and guiding teams.

Work Environment
This is a field-based role in heavy civil construction, working primarily on outdoor job sites in all weather conditions, including cold temperatures and extreme heat. You spend most of your time on active construction operations, leading crews and operating heavy equipment such as dozers, track hoes, graders, excavators, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, and front-end loaders. Work centers on excavation, pipe laying, and storm drainage and stormwater installations, often using GPS systems such as Trimble or TopCon to guide grading and excavation. The environment is fast-paced and production-focused, with clear project deadlines and completion dates. You follow established safety procedures and construction site protocols at all times, wearing appropriate field attire and personal protective equipment suitable for an active construction site.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Charleston, SC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $28.00 - $38.00/hr.
