Job Title: Medical Assistant
Schedule: Monday-Friday / 8am-4:30pm
Key Responsibilities
Phone Triage & Patient Support
- Answer incoming patient calls and assess needs, routing appropriately or escalating to clinical staff as needed
- Perform basic triage by documenting symptoms and relaying information to providers or nurses
- Provide patients with instructions, appointment information, and follow-up guidance
- Manage patient portal messages and return calls in a timely, professional manner
- Document all patient interactions accurately in the EMR
Prior Authorization & Coordination
- Submit and track prior authorizations for medications, procedures, and diagnostic testing
- Verify insurance coverage and obtain required approvals from payers
- Communicate with insurance companies, pharmacies, and providers to resolve authorization issues
- Monitor pending authorizations and follow up to ensure timely approvals
- Maintain accurate documentation of authorization statuses and outcomes
Administrative Support
- Assist with scheduling, referrals, and coordination of care
- Maintain organized records and ensure compliance with HIPAA and clinic policies
- Support providers and clinical staff with documentation and workflow efficiency
Work Environment
This role is based in an office-based primary care practice. The Medical Assistant works in exam rooms, clinical areas, and front-office spaces, using an electronic medical record system, including Cerner and PowerChart, to support patient care. The environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, with frequent interaction with patients, providers, and other clinical staff. Standard clinical attire is expected, appropriate for working in a medical office setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Knoxville, TN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
