Description
A rapidly growing defense technology company is seeking Senior Wire Harness Design Engineers to support its Large Platforms product line, with one opening in Austin, TX. The Large Platforms team is currently a group of 5 with strong existing depth in industrial automation and marine ship design.
The specific need is for someone with genuine aerospace EWIS architecture experience, ideally across 2 programs, who brings the process discipline of a regulated aerospace environment along with the energy to apply that rigor in a fast-moving new industry. This role requires independently architecting and implementing complete wiring systems: selecting wires and connectors, defining pin-outs, defining shielding strategy, and specifying physical accommodations for harsh marine operating environments. Unlike a narrower, more repeatable product line, this team works across genuinely diverse and complex systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and independently implement complete wiring systems for Large Platform vessel programs
- Select wires, connectors, and shielding strategies; define pin-outs and physical accommodations for harsh marine environments
- Own both electrical and physical/mechanical design inputs for wire harness systems
- Produce and interpret complex technical documentation with strong configuration control and change management discipline
- Communicate design decisions clearly across engineering, program, and manufacturing stakeholders
- Apply aerospace-grade process rigor to the engineering environment
- Work across diverse and varied product challenges rather than a single repeatable platform
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field strongly preferred; equivalent experience considered
- Austin role: 7 to 10 years of relevant experience
- Genuine aerospace EWIS architecture experience, ideally spanning 2 programs
- Demonstrated ability to independently architect and implement a wiring system, including component selection, pin-out definition, and shielding strategy
- Hands-on experience with an ECAD tool (Zuken E3, Siemens Capital, EPLAN, or equivalent), a PLM tool (Windchill, Arena, or equivalent), and an MCAD tool (NX, Creo, CATIA, or SolidWorks)
- Strong technical documentation and configuration control discipline

Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience at Airbus, Lockheed, BAE Systems, or Boeing
- Agriculture equipment industry experience (John Deere, Volvo)
- Experience across genuinely diverse and complex product types
- Brief or informal project/team leadership experience
- Demonstrated energy and adaptability moving from a highly regulated legacy industry into a fast-moving startup environment
Additional Notes
The primary gap the team is trying to fill is aerospace EWIS architecture experience. They are specifically looking for someone who has performed this work in an aerospace environment, ideally across two programs.
Culture fit is important. The team wants someone with genuine enthusiasm to apply aerospace-grade process rigor to a new industry. A candidate who has spent 20 years at a single legacy aerospace company may not be the right fit even with the right technical background. Energy and adaptability matter as much as tenure.
Agriculture equipment companies such as John Deere and Volvo have been strong secondary talent sources due to their exposure to complex environmental and mechanical design challenges.
