This Software Engineer role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining application-level software for secure and non-secure telephone applications and related telecommunication equipment. You will work primarily in C++ within a Linux/Unix environment, contributing to high-level design as well as implementation from scratch, not just sustaining existing code. The position is fully on-site in Richardson, Texas, within a small, highly technical engineering team, and offers a flexible work environment and strong benefits when converted to full time.
Responsibilities- Design, develop, and maintain application-level software for secure and non-secure telephone applications and related telecommunication equipment.
- Derive, analyze, and document clear and complete software requirements.
- Perform both preliminary and detailed software design, including high-level architecture and object-oriented design.
- Implement software using C++ (and other C-based languages as appropriate) in a Linux/Unix environment, starting projects from scratch rather than only sustaining existing code.
- Write, maintain, and execute unit, integration, and system-level software tests to ensure quality and reliability.
- Apply established software engineering practices throughout the development life cycle, including design, implementation, testing, and maintenance.
- Collaborate with other engineers on complex systems, contributing to design discussions and technical decision-making.
- Work with software-hardware interfaces as needed to ensure proper integration with telecommunication equipment.
- Estimate, plan, and manage personal work to meet deliverables and project deadlines with limited supervision.
- Communicate effectively in written and verbal form with team members, documenting designs, requirements, and test results.
- Demonstrate leadership potential by taking initiative, driving tasks to completion, and supporting team goals.
- Continuously improve code quality, design approaches, and development processes in line with best practices for object-oriented programming.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or an engineering-related field.
- Approximately 5–8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 2–7 years of hands-on software engineering experience emphasized and a preference for mid-level candidates.
- 8+ years of experience using C++ application programming, which may include educational experience, with strong coding and design skills.
- Proficiency in C++ in a Linux/Unix or similar operating system environment.
- Strong object-oriented programming skills and experience with object-oriented software development methodologies.
- Solid understanding of software engineering practices, including the full development life cycle.
- Experience designing high-level software architecture and starting new codebases from scratch.
- Demonstrated ability to work on complex systems and meet deliverables with limited supervision.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze and resolve technical issues effectively.
- Organizational and planning skills to manage tasks and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within an engineering team.
- Self-driven, motivated, and able to take initiative in technical and project-related tasks.
- Familiarity with Linux or other Unix-like operating systems as a core development environment.
- Experience with Qt, Google Protocol Buffers, C++11, Boost, and software-hardware interfaces is a plus.
- Experience with any C-based programming languages beyond C++ is welcome, especially with strong object-oriented design skills.
- Leadership experience or demonstrated leadership potential is highly valued, though not strictly required.
- Preference for candidates willing to acquire a DoD security clearance.
- Ability to rate and reflect honestly on proficiency in C++ and other programming languages to support skill assessment.
- Experience working in small, agile engineering teams is beneficial.
- Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is particularly relevant, though related engineering degrees are also suitable.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to peers.
This role is fully on-site in Richardson, Texas, within a small company of approximately 40–45 people and an engineering group of about 30–35 engineers. The environment is highly technical, collaborative, and fast-paced, with a strong emphasis on initiative and eagerness to contribute. Engineers work primarily with C++ in Linux/Unix environments, following established software engineering practices and object-oriented methodologies. The company offers a flexible work environment and flexible work hours. When converted to full-time, benefits include generous paid time off (4 weeks from day one), company-paid benefits with the exception of health coverage, and a retirement plan with a 200% match up to 8% of salary. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $72.00/hr.
