Job Title: Telecom Technician Lead
Pay rate: 30-35/hour DOE
Day shift, Mon-Friday
Job Description
This role leads a small team of telecom techs to install, maintain, and repair low-voltage telecommunications systems across the greater Salt Lake City area, including travel north and south within Utah. The Telecom Technician Lead works hands-on in the field pulling cable, using hand and power tools, building and terminating structured cabling systems, and ensuring work meets quality and safety standards. In addition to technical duties, this position provides daily direction, feedback, scheduling, and on-site coordination for an entry-level field crew, helping to develop team members and support long-term telecom projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a small field team of communications technicians on telecom construction projects, providing clear direction, daily task assignments, feedback, and support.
- Coordinate and assist with scheduling for the team, ensuring coverage for project sites and completion of assigned work within required timeframes.
- Build telecommunications closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and related equipment.
- Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required to meet safety and quality standards.
- Accurately complete all required project documentation and paperwork, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, and other forms as needed.
- Support and model a positive, professional work culture, reinforcing company mission and expectations with team members, vendors, clients, and business partners.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalency.
- 3-5 years of experience in telecommunications, structured cabling, or a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on technical exposure.
- Construction experience, including general labor or construction-related work, with familiarity with job site practices.
- Ability to work at heights, off ladders, and in confined spaces as required by the job.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds as part of daily work activities.
- Ability to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
- Ability to effectively read, write, and communicate, including giving clear oral instructions and updates to team members and clients.
- Basic understanding or ability to learn to interpret blueprints, specifications, and other project documents.
- Comfort with traveling and driving to various project sites
- Possession of, and ability to effectively use, basic hand tools and power tools
- Ability to meet company minimum driving standards, including maintaining a valid driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle, is preferred.
- Ability to adapt to different project locations and changing priorities while maintaining professionalism.
Work Environment
This position is field-based and involves working at various project sites across Utah, including locations in and around the greater Salt Lake City area and down to Provo. Typical shifts are daytime, with the workday usually starting at 6:00 a.m. Employees are expected to work 40 hours per week and can typically choose between a 5x8 or 4x10 schedule, subject to project needs.
