Job Description
The Energy Marshal plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of electrical operations on-site. This individual is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and enforcing adherence to the project’s Electrical Safety Plan. The Energy Marshal holds sole authority to authorize work on energized or de-energized equipment, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete NFPA 70E training on Electrical Safety-Related Work Practices.
- Assign and oversee a qualified Deputy Energy Marshal as a backup.
- Review the Electrical Energization Safety Program with the electrical contractor and commissioning authority.
- Organize and schedule pre-energization meetings at least five (5) days prior to energizing or de-energizing critical equipment.
- Identify the CM’s Energy Marshal and Deputy at pre-energization meetings and review roles and responsibilities.
- Verify that all personnel working on energized or de-energized equipment are Qualified Workers in accordance with NFPA 70E, OSHA, or other recognized electrical safety standards.
- Maintain a project log documenting Qualified Worker certifications.
- Deliver project-specific Electrical Safety Orientation to relevant personnel.
- Review and verify the accuracy of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) plans.
- Review electricians’ and vendors’ Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs).
- Confirm receipt of approved coordination studies and ensure arc flash labeling is applied to all equipment.
- Track and verify completion of all required QA/QC documentation.
- Review daily Pre-Task Plans for energization activities.
- Communicate daily high-risk activities, energized systems, restricted areas, and required safety controls to the project team.
- Confirm completion of all pre-energization requirements prior to work execution.
- Coordinate all energization and de-energization activities with project stakeholders.
- Lead daily kickoff meetings to review LOTO plans and site activities.
- Maintain and update posted single-line diagrams for energized equipment and LOTO tracking.
- Conduct daily pre-energization walks with electricians and project teams, along with end-of-day inspections to ensure equipment is secured.
- Enforce compliance with LOTO plans and isolation procedures.
- Install Energy Marshal locks on lockboxes (using designated color coding) and ensure removal occurs only after final verification.
- Ensure proper signage, barriers, and restricted access controls are in place for energized areas.
- Wear a clearly identifiable Energy Marshal safety vest while on-site.
Required Qualifications
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in electrical construction or related fields
- NFPA 70E certification (Electrical Safety Training)
- Experience working in data center environments
- Strong background in electrical construction
- Medium-voltage experience
- Commissioning experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in construction, energy efficiency, energy auditing, or commissioning environments
- Knowledge of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Quality Assurance (QA), and Quality Control (QC) processes
Work Environment & Benefits
- On-site role at a data center, typically 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM
- Contract position with potential for permanent hire
- Open to candidates willing to travel or relocate
- Two (2) weeks of PTO and ten (10) paid holidays
- Traveling employees may return home every other weekend
This is a Contract position based out of Herndon, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $125000.00/hr.
