Job Title: Assistant Superintendent
Job Description
The Assistant Superintendent supports day-to-day field operations on commercial construction projects while developing strong technical and leadership skills. This entry-level role involves hands-on work across multiple trades, coordination with subcontractors, and active participation in scheduling, site logistics, and safety enforcement. The position focuses on supporting planning efforts, quality control, inspections, and project closeout while building core competencies in communication, teamwork, leadership, organization, and adaptability.
Responsibilities
- Support daily field operations on commercial construction projects and assist in managing activities across multiple trades.
- Perform hands-on work in the field as needed to help keep the project on schedule and ensure tasks are completed to standard.
- Assist with subcontractor coordination, including scheduling, monitoring performance, and helping to resolve issues that arise on site.
- Support the development and maintenance of look-ahead schedules, task sequencing, and material delivery plans to keep work progressing efficiently.
- Help manage site logistics, including material staging, equipment placement, and workflow to maintain an organized and efficient jobsite.
- Promote and enforce jobsite safety standards in alignment with OSHA requirements and company policies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite, including the field office or trailer and surrounding work areas.
- Assist with quality control by monitoring workmanship, verifying compliance with plans and specifications, and documenting any deficiencies.
- Help coordinate inspections and permits, ensuring required inspections are scheduled, passed, and properly documented.
- Support interactions with owners, architects, and other stakeholders by helping prepare the site for visits and presenting a professional image.
- Assist with punch list creation and completion, ensuring outstanding items are tracked, assigned, and resolved in a timely manner.
- Support project closeout activities, including documentation, final inspections, and turnover requirements, with minimal supervision.
- Perform administrative tasks related to field operations, such as updating logs, reports, and schedules as directed.
- Build strong working relationships with team members, subcontractors, and clients, and represent the company in a professional manner.
- Actively develop core competencies in communication, teamwork, leadership, organization, and adaptability through daily jobsite responsibilities.
- Travel to and work on assigned project sites as needed and perform physical jobsite work in support of project goals.
Essential Skills
- Basic construction knowledge with the ability to understand commercial construction processes and terminology.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Assistant Superintendent, preferably on commercial construction projects.
- Experience managing project timelines and helping to keep work on schedule.
- Experience overseeing subcontractors and supporting subcontractor coordination in the field.
- Ability to support project scheduling, including look-ahead schedules and task sequencing.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
- OSHA certification and commitment to enforcing jobsite safety standards.
- Ability to perform physical jobsite work and spend extended time on active construction sites.
- Strong communication skills to interact effectively with project teams, subcontractors, and clients.
- Organizational skills to assist with planning, documentation, and coordination of field activities.
- Adaptability and willingness to learn, develop leadership skills, and take on increasing responsibility.

Work Environment
The Assistant Superintendent works primarily on active commercial construction job sites and is based in a field trailer at the project location in Hopewell, VA. The role is field-focused and involves regular movement around the jobsite, coordination with trade partners, and hands-on support of construction activities. The environment includes ground-up commercial projects such as hotels, gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurant builds. Work is performed in a dynamic construction setting that may involve varying weather conditions, noise, and the use of standard construction tools and equipment. The position requires travel to and from the jobsite and consistent on-site presence to support day-to-day operations and field management.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Hopewell, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $36.06 - $38.46/hr.
