Job Description
The Phlebotomist plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, troubleshooting issues, participating in training, and recommending workflow improvements. This position focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and courteous specimen collection while maintaining strict compliance with laboratory protocols and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Collect, handle, and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens for transport and follow all protocols for temperature control, container selection, and documentation.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow different procedures and protocols for specimen handling and transport as required to preserve specimen quality.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards and safety guidelines.
- Update patient information accurately in laboratory systems and records.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper test selection and specimen handling.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control policies.
- Attend annual department trainings and participate in ongoing education related to phlebotomy and laboratory procedures.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations for process improvements.
- Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques as needed.
- Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results as appropriate to assist internal and external stakeholders.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Proven experience performing blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Hands-on experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify orders.
- Proficiency in updating patient information and recording maintenance data in laboratory systems.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in test requisitions, labeling, and documentation.
- Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2–4 years of overall work experience.
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Leesburg, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
