Certified or Registered Medical Assistant – Dermatology
Job Description
This role offers a hands-on opportunity for a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant to support a busy dermatology department by performing patient rooming, intake, vitals, and a variety of clinical and administrative tasks. You will work closely with providers across two locations, gaining exposure to specialized dermatology procedures in a supportive, family-like learning environment that is ideal for those who wish to grow in their medical career, including those planning to become a registered nurse.
Responsibilities
- Perform rooming and intake of incoming patients, ensuring charts and documentation are complete and accurate.
- Measure and record patient vital signs, including but not limited to blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and weight.
- Prepare exam rooms and ensure all necessary supplies and equipment are available for patient visits.
- Sterilize surgical instruments and maintain proper infection control and aseptic techniques.
- Assist with dermatology procedures, including suture removal and other minor in-office procedures as directed by providers.
- Complete prior authorization tasks and support other related administrative duties to ensure efficient patient care.
- Carry out general medical assistant duties such as updating patient records, assisting providers during exams, and coordinating patient flow.
- Travel between the Norfolk and Virginia Beach offices as scheduled, maintaining punctuality and reliability.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, providers, and colleagues to support a positive patient experience.
- Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented environment and actively participate in learning new skills and procedures.
Essential Skills
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential.
- At least 6 months of strong, hands-on medical assistant experience.
- Experience performing patient intake and rooming, including collecting histories and updating records.
- Demonstrated experience taking and documenting vital signs accurately.
- Ability to sterilize surgical instruments and follow infection control protocols.
- Reliable transportation to travel between Norfolk and Virginia Beach locations, including 2–3 times per week at the Virginia Beach office.
- Strong reliability, punctuality, and professionalism in a clinical setting.
- Ability to follow clinical instructions, support providers, and maintain patient confidentiality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Dermatology or surgical experience is highly preferred but not required.
- Interest in learning specialized dermatology skills and procedures.
- Motivation to grow professionally, including those planning to pursue a registered nurse (RN) career path.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on patient-centered care.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a close-knit, supportive team.
- Comfort working across multiple sites and adapting to different clinic workflows.
Work Environment
This position is based in a dermatology department that operates across two sites in Norfolk, VA and Virginia Beach, VA. The role requires regular travel between both locations, with most time spent in Norfolk and approximately 2–3 days per week in Virginia Beach, so reliable transportation is essential. The schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch break. You will work in a clinical environment that includes exam rooms, dermatology procedure rooms, and sterilization areas, using standard medical equipment and instruments. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
