Job Description
This role focuses on installing, updating, and servicing low voltage systems in commercial and retail environments across the Hampton Roads and greater Richmond areas. You will work with low voltage electricity (0–50 volts) to support security, audio, video, access control, and telecommunications systems in active businesses such as retail stores, restaurants, and office buildings. The position requires strong technical aptitude, the ability to work independently, and a flexible schedule to support both day and night work as needed.
Responsibilities
- Install, test, terminate, and troubleshoot CAT5, CAT6, coax, and other low voltage cabling for voice, data, video, and security systems in new and existing offices, stores, and commercial buildings.
- Update existing low voltage systems and run new wiring in commercial facilities while adhering to project specifications and safety standards.
- Monitor and support contractors pulling wires and handling materials at client sites, ensuring work meets quality and safety requirements.
- Install and service security, audio, video, access control, and telecommunications systems, including related equipment and components.
- Recognize and locate network and telecommunications hardware such as routers, switches, demarcation points, phone systems, access points, printers, and fax machines.
- Follow installation manuals and instructions to install cash registers, computers, printers, and other connected equipment.
- Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment safely and efficiently at job sites and storage locations.
- Install and connect copper LAN wiring, telephone wiring, and fiber optic cables in strict accordance with written and oral specifications.
- Identify and resolve installation and connection issues safely and efficiently as they arise on the job.
- Assimilate and apply new methodologies, technologies, and concepts related to cable installation, termination, and connection.
- Maintain accurate documentation and paperwork for installations, service calls, and materials used.
- Work effectively and efficiently with customers, supervisors, and other contractors to complete projects on time and to specification.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and other on-site personnel to coordinate work and resolve issues.
- Perform job duties with minimal supervision, demonstrating the ability to plan, organize, and complete tasks independently.
- Train and supervise assistant cable technicians and helpers, providing guidance on proper installation techniques, safety practices, and quality standards.
- Demonstrate technical skills with 66 blocks, 110 blocks, patch panels, and 8-pin modular plugs during interview and on the job.
- At least 3 years of experience working as a low voltage technician or in a closely related role involving low voltage systems and cabling.
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing tasks and priorities effectively.
- Hands-on experience installing, testing, terminating, and troubleshooting CAT5, CAT6, coax, and other low voltage cabling for voice, data, video, and security systems.
- Demonstrated proficiency with 66 blocks, 110 blocks, patch panels, and 8-pin modular plugs, with the ability to showcase these skills during the interview process.
- Ability to recognize and locate routers, switches, demarcation points, phone systems, access points, printers, and fax machines in commercial environments.
- Capability to follow installation manuals and technical documentation to install cash registers, computers, printers, and other networked equipment.
- Strong understanding of copper LAN wiring, telephone wiring, and basic fiber optic cable installation and connection practices.
- Good driving record with the ability to provide a current DMV report as required.
- Very good computer skills, including proficiency with tablets and smartphones, and the ability to use job-related applications and digital tools.
- Ownership and regular use of a smartphone for work-related communication and documentation.
- Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to consistently show up on time and adhere to a flexible work schedule.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with customers, supervisors, and other contractors.
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation and paperwork related to installations, service calls, and materials.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to company policies and procedures while working with low voltage electrical systems.
- Electrical experience, particularly with low voltage systems, is highly beneficial.
- Fiber optic experience, including installation and basic troubleshooting, is very helpful.
- BICSI certification is a plus and demonstrates a strong foundation in telecommunications infrastructure.
- DCJS certification is a plus for candidates involved in security and access control installations.
- Experience working in commercial and retail environments such as grocery stores, clothing stores, restaurants, and other active businesses.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies, tools, and installation methods as they are introduced.
- Comfort working a rotating schedule that may include both day and night shifts, as well as occasional out-of-town assignments.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to resolve installation and connection issues in the field.
- Experience training or mentoring assistant technicians or helpers is advantageous.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $30.00/hr.
