The SUE Technician identifies, locates, and documents underground utilities using subsurface utility engineering methods. This role requires interpreting utility maps and construction plans, operating electromagnetic detection equipment and ground-penetrating radar, and producing accurate sketches and records of all work completed. The technician supports survey and mapping activities while adhering to strict health and safety standards and contributing to a collaborative field team.
Responsibilities- Read and interpret construction plans, utility maps, and utility records to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
- Operate electromagnetic detection equipment and other utility locating tools to accurately designate subsurface utilities within prescribed accuracy limits.
- Produce neat, clear, and legible sketches of utilities that have been located and marked in the field.
- Document all work performed accurately, including utility locations, measurements, and related survey information.
- Understand and follow company health and safety standards and relevant job-site and traffic control safety rules.
- Work effectively in a team environment, communicating clearly with field staff and office personnel.
- Coordinate daily activities and project needs with the SUE manager and other project stakeholders.
- Help maintain field supply inventory and report inventory levels to the supervisor on a continuous basis to prevent stock shortages.
- Keep assigned vehicle clean, free from trash, and properly fueled to ensure readiness for field operations.
- Use basic calculators to perform arithmetic computations accurately and record results legibly.
- Learn and apply survey computer programs and survey computations relevant to subsurface utility engineering and mapping tasks.
- Travel to various project sites throughout Virginia and surrounding states and work overtime as needed to meet project deadlines.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in designating all types of underground utilities.
- Proficiency in subsurface utility engineering and utility locating techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and utility records.
- Experience with land survey and mapping practices related to utility designation.
- Ability to operate electromagnetic detection equipment for subsurface utility locating.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid drivers license with a good driving record.
- Basic math competency and the ability to perform accurate arithmetic computations.
- Ability to use a basic calculator and record numerical results legibly.
- Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in a team environment.
- Experience in the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a plus.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn survey computer programs used for utility mapping and survey computations.
- Familiarity with survey and mapping workflows in support of subsurface utility engineering.
- Strong attention to detail in field documentation and sketching of utilities.
- Commitment to following job-site and traffic control safety rules.
This position is primarily field-based and involves working on various project sites across Virginia and surrounding states. The role may include participation in workshare arrangements, which can result in temporary assignments to projects managed by other offices and may require travel, including occasional weekend stays. The technician must be willing and able to travel and work overtime as project needs arise. Work is performed outdoors and around active job sites, requiring adherence to health, safety, and traffic control standards. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $41600.00 - $52000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
