Job Title: Fire Protection Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on implementing standardized fire protection mechanical design and related code analysis for data centers. The Fire Protection Engineer applies strong technical and analytical skills to develop and review fire suppression, fire detection, fire alarm, and overall fire safety systems. Working closely with lead fire protection and mechanical engineers, this position drives improvements in design standards, ensures compliance with applicable codes and standards, and supports construction and operations teams to deliver safe, reliable facilities.
Responsibilities
- Implement standardized fire protection mechanical designs, including fire suppression, fire detection, fire alarm, and overall fire safety systems for data centers.
- Drive continuous improvement of fire protection design standards, guidelines, and project approaches under the oversight of a Lead Fire Protection Engineer.
- Collaborate with third-party design vendors to review concept designs and designs in progress, ensuring alignment with established design standards, local codes, and requirements of Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
- Coordinate interdisciplinary fire protection and life safety design elements with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other engineering disciplines.
- Work closely with construction, commissioning, and risk management teams to respond to requests for information (RFIs), address value engineering proposals, and resolve technical issues.
- Develop, review, and oversee construction documents for fire protection systems, including design drawings, control diagrams, specifications, and related documentation for all trades.
- Perform code compliance reviews and ensure design and installation standards meet local codes, NFPA standards, ICC requirements, and other applicable fire protection industry standards.
- Evaluate and assess water supplies to support fire suppression system design and performance requirements.
- Support and oversee testing, inspections, and submittal reviews for fire suppression and fire alarm systems, ensuring accurate and complete documentation.
- Review construction submittals for fire suppression and fire alarm systems, including shop drawings, hydraulic or other calculations, product data, and RFIs.
- Meet with AHJs, such as fire marshals, plans examiners, and inspectors, as needed to obtain approval of fire protection features and address code-related questions.
- Participate in regular fire protection team meetings and one-on-one sessions with lead fire protection engineers to align on design strategies, project priorities, and technical best practices.
- Use engineering project management and design tools, such as Revit and AutoCAD, to produce and review drawings, models, and documentation.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of design review processes, specifications, and design standards for fire protection systems.
- Support preparation of Code Modification Requests (CMRs) and Alternate Materials and Methods (AMM) proposals when needed to achieve compliant and efficient designs.
Essential Skills
- BSc or MSc in fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering, or an equivalent engineering degree in a related field, or 5 years of qualifying experience in a related discipline.
- A cumulative minimum of 2 years of experience in design engineering or the construction industry related to fire protection engineering, including fire suppression systems, fire alarm and detection systems, fire-resistive construction, and life safety.
- Demonstrated experience applying local building and fire codes, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, International Code Council (ICC) requirements, and other fire protection industry standards, procedures, and methodologies.
- Experience with design review processes, including reviewing drawings and specifications, developing design standards, and performing submittal reviews.
- Hands-on experience with construction documentation such as design drawings, controls diagrams, specifications, and related documents for multiple trades.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to diverse stakeholders.
- Mechanical engineering and plumbing design knowledge relevant to building fire protection systems.
- Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD for creating and reviewing engineering drawings and models.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working on construction projects for data centers, critical medical facilities, industrial facilities, oil and gas projects, or other large-scale mechanical and power systems.
- Experience preparing and supporting Code Modification Requests (CMRs) and Alternate Materials and Methods (AMM) proposals.
- Experience collaborating with fire marshals, fire plans examiners, fire inspectors, or other Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) on fire protection design approvals.
- Familiarity with engineering project management software to track design progress, documentation, and coordination activities.
- Ability to work effectively with lead fire protection engineers and mechanical engineers, contributing to team-based problem solving.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills, with a focus on accuracy, completeness, and adherence to standards in all design and documentation activities.
Work Environment
The role offers a collaborative, engineering-driven environment with significant interaction across fire protection, mechanical, construction, commissioning, and risk management teams. Approximately 5% of the role involves participating in team and fire protection meetings, 40% involves working directly with a lead fire protection engineer on design and code-related tasks, and another 40% involves partnering with mechanical engineers and responding to RFIs. The remaining 15% provides flexible time to focus on additional fire protection tasks, follow-up calls, and specialized technical work. The position includes regular one-on-one meetings with a lead fire protection engineer to support mentorship, professional development, and technical alignment. You will use modern engineering tools such as Revit and AutoCAD, along with project management software, in a setting that emphasizes high standards for safety, code compliance, and technical excellence.
