Job Description
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
- Updating patient information.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explain in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport.
- Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols deemed necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced hospital setting. Inpatient and Outpatient experience needed!!!
- Phlebotomy processing experience is highly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma
- Phlebotomy Certification is preferred.
