Hospital Phlebotomist

Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
• Updating patient information.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Properly explain in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport.
• Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols deemed necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced hospital setting. Inpatient and Outpatient experience needed!!!
• Phlebotomy processing experience is highly preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma
• Phlebotomy Certification is preferred.
