Data Center Technician
Summary:
The Data Center Technician is responsible for preparing, staging, setting up, and performing startups and shutdowns of various hardware components such as racks, hard drives, and switches. This role involves following specific instructions, checklists, guides, standard protocols, and emails to ensure proper execution. The technician will perform post-execution quality checks to verify that grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling are set up according to safety protocols, deployment standards, and planned Network Design Tasks (NDTs). Additionally, the technician will perform diagnostics and troubleshooting, quickly identifying and resolving issues, and replacing faulty components. The role also includes decommissioning hardware for simple changes and refreshes, such as memory upgrades and OS rebuilds, following standard procedures with minimal guidance. The technician will follow procedures to communicate, report, and escalate incidents to appropriate Datacenter Technician Leads.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare, stage, set up, and perform startups and shutdowns of hardware components.
- Conduct post-execution quality checks to ensure compliance with safety protocols and deployment standards.
- Perform diagnostics and troubleshooting to identify and resolve issues quickly.
- Replace faulty components and decommission hardware for simple changes and refreshes.
- Communicate, report, and escalate incidents to Datacenter Technician Leads as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of computer hardware, servers, and components.
- At least 1 year of experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.
- Basic understanding of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Flexibility to work non-standard business hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Previous datacenter experience is a plus.
Additional Job Responsibilities:
- Monitor systems for equipment failure or performance errors.
- Respond to program error messages by identifying and correcting problems or terminating the program.
- Assist programmers and systems analysts in testing and debugging new programs.
- Operate spreadsheet programs and other software to load, manipulate data, and produce reports.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in computer programming or equivalent training.
- 5-7 years of experience in a related field.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving skills, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Top Skills:
- 3-5 years of Data Center Technician experience (break/fix, hardware deployments, decommissions, etc.).
- Relevant certifications such as A+, Network+, CCNA, or other networking or hardware certifications.
- IT education (Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Technology).
