Explaining military experience to civilian employers is one of the hardest parts of transitioning out of service. Rank2Role, CareerCircle's new military service translator, turns your branch, rank, and occupation code into a civilian career summary you can use in interviews, then uses that summary to match you with live job openings. Watch Brad, our product owner, walk through how it works.

0:10 – Introduction

Rank2Role does two things for you. First, it rewrites your service in civilian language, so you have a career summary ready when you sit down with an employer. Second, that summary powers your job matches.

0:47 – An Overview of the Input Fields

Rank2Role needs four fields to get started:

Branch

Rank

MOS, rating, or AFSC

Years of service

Enter your information into these fields and we'll be able to start showing you relevant jobs.

2:00 – Showing a Sample Search Using Rank2Role

To see Rank2Role in action, this part of the video runs a sample search for an 11B with six years of service.

2:40 – Explaining The Career Summary

Your career summary describes your service in terms of the work you did, like managing personnel, ensuring compliance, and responding to incidents. It's written by AI using CareerCircle's custom prompt, federal crosswalk data, and our own rank and duty mapping.

You can copy the summary to use anywhere or edit it to add or remove things. Rank2Role searches on whatever your summary says, so if you're aiming for a specific kind of work, add it to your summary and search again.

4:00 – Adding Duties, Skills, Certifications, and Education

You can add additional duties, certifications, education, and skills, then update your summary to include them. Because the summary drives the search, your matches update too and can open up roles beyond your primary MOS. For example, an 11B with an OSHA card and a year as a safety NCO could also match safety coordinator, training specialist, and operations lead roles.

4:50 – Looking at Real Jobs

If you want to see what a search looks like, this part of the video walks through a sample results page. You’ll see live openings from our partner employers, matched to your career summary and set at the right level for your rank. Brad also covers the filters you can use to narrow results, including date posted, work setting, and search radius.

6:20 – How a Resume Enhances the Search

Each job card shows a skills match, highlighting which required skills you already have based on your resume and profile. Uploading a resume makes the jobs we show you more accurate

Interviewing can be stressful, especially if you are just starting your career, rejoining the workforce after an extended period, or transitioning into a new industry. Below are five tips you should think about as you begin your journey.

Before Your Job Interview

Searching for and applying to open roles typically takes significant time and effort. It's essential to prepare for your job interview before the day it's scheduled, even when your schedule feels overwhelming.

Spending a couple of hours on prep ahead of your job interview will help you walk in feeling confident and prepared. Prior preparation is the not-so-secret key to impressing your potential employer and presenting the best version of yourself to everyone in the room, or on your computer screen.

#1 Research your potential employer

Research is one of the most valuable pre-interview activities out there. It equips you to provide informed answers to interview questions and to show your potential employer that you're genuinely invested in becoming part of their company.

Take some time to read up on the company. Browse their website, social profiles, and any other content you can find online to learn about who they are and how you could contribute to their efforts. Before you walk into your interview, you should familiarize yourself with several key facts and answer questions like:

What is the organization's mission?

Who are their target customers?

What products, services, or solutions do they provide?

This research also allows you to identify what you'd like to learn during the interview. Even though some of us imagine an interview as a one-way interrogation, it should actually be a two-way conversation that allows you to learn about your potential employer as they learn about you. Consider how well the company's values and culture align with your own, as well as how the role you're interviewing for complements your skillset and past experience.

Jot down any questions you have about the company or the specific role you're applying for. Your curiosity will show interviewers that you've done your research, and it gives you a chance to learn more about the company during the initial stages of the hiring process. Make sure you come up with questions you are actually curious about and not just trying to check the box of asking questions.

#2 Practice, practice, practice

Job interviews can be nerve-wracking, but practice can help you kick the nerves and put your best foot forward on interview day. Start by reviewing typical interview questions and practice your answers. You can ask AI tools like Claude or Gemini to ask you potential questions and work with the tool to refine your answers. You'll want to use each question as an opportunity to highlight relevant skills from your resume and give interviewers more insight into your previous experiences. They have your resume and application materials. They've read it. Now, tell them what it means for them. Be prepared to describe what about your approach led to the accolades on the page in front of them.

Steer clear of writing a script or memorizing your responses word-for-word. Instead, spend some time thinking deeply about your answers and practicing them out loud to lower your risk of freezing up when you're on the spot.

Practice runs are another great way to get comfortable with the interview process. Ask a friend or family member to conduct a simulated interview with you based on the questions you uncovered in your research. Do it as many times as you can until you feel confident.

On the Day of Your Job Interview

You'll have a lot on your mind the day of your interview, but keeping a few tried-and-true tips in mind will help you stay cool, calm, and collected throughout the process.

#3 Show up on time

Everyone's time is valuable, including yours! Arriving at your interview on time and ready to begin right away makes a great first impression with employers and helps ensure the discussion flows smoothly.

In this case, timeliness doesn't just mean beating the clock but also giving yourself some time to work out technical difficulties on Zoom or find the correct suite number in a large office building.

In-person interviews

Most working professionals follow the mantra: to be early is to be on time…to be on time is to be late.

When attending an interview, you might need a few extra minutes to account for the train schedule, find a parking space, navigate the building, etc. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Look up the location and how long it will take to get there. Include a buffer for traffic if needed.

Plan to arrive five to ten minutes early for the interview.

Give yourself extra time to pull yourself together, gather your thoughts, and calm your nerves. Take some deep breaths too.

Virtual interviews

Virtual interviews have become increasingly popular, especially since the pandemic. This interview format eliminates your commute and, for some people, adds an extra level of comfort since they can take the call from their own home. And while you don't have to worry about traffic or sit in a crowded waiting room, there are still a few ways to demonstrate punctuality and preparedness:

Download the necessary software tools (like Zoom or Teams) in advance, not five minutes before the call.

Test your audio and video settings to ensure everyone can see and hear you.

Join the interviewer's virtual waiting room 2-3 minutes before the scheduled interview time.

#4 Engage with the interviewer(s)

Interviews can be daunting, especially if you’re in front of several people. Remember to make eye contact with the interviewer(s) asking the questions, keep an eye on body language, and engage with everyone in attendance, whether you’re in a 1-1 interview or meeting with a panel. Employers are looking for unspoken clues about you, the candidate, through various means.

Body language speaks volumes and can help communicate a positive message to your interviewer. You don’t want to come off as sloppy or stiff. Think about your posture. Sitting straight conveys you are comfortable and confident, while slouching or being hunched over may give an impression of nervousness or even of low self-esteem.

Know your audience and carefully read the room. Be energetic but not overconfident. Employ active listening techniques to pay attention to all questions. Tips for active listening include:

Strive to make a relatable connection with your interviewer, especially in a virtual setting. Make sure to look at the camera during virtual interviews and not yourself on the screen.

Summarize and repeat back what you heard to ensure accuracy and alignment.

Concentrate on the message and value behind each comment your interviewer makes.

A surge in virtual connections has created a presence of humanity in the historically polished video landscape. If your dog or child unexpectedly enters the room during your interview, or a loud background noise comes through, don’t let it fluster you too much. It’s OK to simply address what is happening with the understanding that a culture of empathy is prevailing in the world of video conferencing.

Once you’re settled and listening closely, the next step is giving a strong answer. Behavioral questions, the ones that start with “Tell me about a time when...” or “Give me an example of...,” are where the STAR method helps most. It gives your answer a clear beginning, middle, and end, so you stay on track and your interviewer can follow your story without getting lost in the details.

Situation: Set the scene with a brief description of the context, such as your role, your team, or the challenge you faced.

Task: Explain what you were responsible for or the goal you needed to reach.

Action: Walk through the specific steps you took. Use “I” more than “we” so the interviewer understands your contribution.

Result: Share the outcome, ideally with a number attached, and what you learned from the experience.

For example, if you’re asked about a time you handled a difficult customer, you might describe a billing dispute at a busy front desk (Situation), your goal of resolving it without escalating to a manager (Task), how you listened, verified the account, and offered a credit within policy (Action), and how the customer renewed their membership the following month (Result). Aim to keep each answer to about two minutes, and prepare three or four STAR stories before your interview that you can adapt to different questions.

After Your Interview

You made it! You just crushed an interview with your potential employer, but that doesn't mean you should step back and wait to hear from them. Staying engaged and communicating proactively with the interviewer or your primary contact will help you progress to the next steps in your evaluation.

#5 Say "thank you" and pursue next steps

Sending over a thank you note is a quick and easy post-interview activity that will leave a lasting impression on your interviewer.

Write a short email to the person or group you interviewed with and send it within 24 hours of your interview, simply thanking them for their time and letting them know you look forward to learning more about the next stage in the hiring process. For bonus points, include something you found interesting during the interview, or that you look forward to discussing further during your next interaction.

This message gives you a chance to express your gratitude and seamlessly transition into the "next steps" conversation. Plus, it keeps your name at the top of employers' minds and shows them that you're excited by the prospect of working for them.

Interviewing can be stressful. Here are five tips you should think about as you begin your journey.

Making a Great First Impression: Five Tips for a Successful Interview

Interviewing can be stressful, especially if you are just starting your career, rejoining the workforce after an extended period, or transitioning into a new industry. Below are five tips you should think about as you begin your journey.

We’re excited to provide our members a military service translator that works.

Service members transitioning out of the military often run into the same issue the moment they sit down to write a civilian resume. The language they used for years in the military does not land with civilian recruiters. Many of these recruiters do not know what a 25B builds, what a 1N0X1 analyzes, or why a First Sergeant has more management reps than half the people they interview for director roles. So, for many veterans, the job search begins with figuring how to translate their experience.

From our dozens of interviews with former members of the military, we heard the current tools on the market mostly fell flat. The short-form (often PDF) MOS-to-civilian-job converters often return a single SOC code and a list of titles that may or may not fit. And the white-glove transition services work well but require meeting with an actual person, so members wait and can’t get answers fast. Months pass and frustration builds. Rank2Role was built to fix it.

First, What is a MOS code translator?

For those unfamiliar, a MOS code translator is a tool that takes your military occupational specialty, your Navy rate, your Air Force AFSC, or your Coast Guard rating, and turns it into civilian skills that employers understand.

What separates one translator from another is how much of your record it reads. Some look at your MOS code and nothing else. Others read your rank and a few secondary duties on top of that. A good military service translator should look at everything you bring: your branch, occupation code, rank, years of service, the duties you took on beyond your primary role, and the certifications you earned. The right translation comes from the whole picture, not a single line, and that’s just what Rank2Role does.

Why the CareerCircle Military Service Translator is different

Most MOS translators on the market fall into a few camps, and from our conversations with service members, all have their own issues.

In the first camp, you have the quick-lookup tools. You enter your MOS, they hand back a SOC code and a list of generic job titles, and that’s the end of it. The translation is technically there, but you are still the one doing the work: opening the SOC list in one tab, pulling up a job board in another, searching titles, scrolling through hundreds of postings, and trying to guess which ones want what you have.

In the second camp, you have the people-led transition programs. The counselors who run these programs know what they are doing and care about getting it right. However, a single counselor can only take so many clients at a time. Demand far outstrips supply, so most service members never get in the door, and the ones who do often wait weeks for an appointment.

A third group of tools sits somewhere in the middle. These tools try to read more than the MOS code, but they group roles too broadly. A senior NCO and a junior enlisted member with the same MOS get the same recommendations, and the matches lose the specificity that would make them useful.

Rank2Role was designed to read more of your history, work harder, and provide actual jobs to members. Here is what makes us different:

Our translator reads your whole record, not one line. It takes in your branch, MOS, rank, years of service, duties beyond your primary role, certifications, and education. The translation is built from many different facets.

Our translator gives you to real jobs, not generic titles. Your translated profile is used to show open roles where employers are hiring right now. The result is a set of real postings to apply to, not a list of titles to go look up jobs somewhere else.

Our translator helps provide you with a civilian summary. We take your experience in the military and translate it all into a cohesive civilian summary that you can use for an experience summary on your resume.

There was nothing like this when I had originally got out the Army in 2019 and a tool like this would have been amazingly beneficial for me and my family.
