The HVAC Controls Technician serves as a key field representative, providing front-line technical and repair support for HVAC control systems while delivering courteous and professional service. This role focuses on troubleshooting, installing, starting up, and commissioning building automation and HVAC control systems, including mechanical, electrical, and low-voltage components. The technician collaborates closely with the operations team to meet customer needs efficiently, supports internal and external stakeholders through clear communication, and ensures projects are completed on time, within budget, and to a high quality standard. This position also contributes to team development by mentoring other technicians and actively participating in continuous learning and training.
Responsibilities- Serve as a professional and courteous field representative in all customer and team interactions.
- Provide front-line technical and repair support by communicating effectively with internal teams and external customers.
- Collaborate with the Operations Team to address customer needs promptly and efficiently.
- Respond to internal and external customer requests in a timely and organized manner.
- Perform troubleshooting, installation, start-up, and commissioning of HVAC control systems, including mechanical, electrical, and low-voltage components.
- Execute project field work independently while maintaining quality standards and adhering to budgeted timelines.
- Mentor and support other technicians in all aspects of project execution, including field work, troubleshooting, and documentation.
- Review mechanical plans and control submittals to identify potential issues with devices, wiring, or sequences of operation.
- Modify and troubleshoot control programming as needed to support project requirements and system performance.
- Conduct customer training sessions for completed projects to ensure proper understanding and operation of control systems.
- Participate in company training programs and pursue self-directed learning to maintain and enhance technical expertise.
- Document changes to control systems for accurate as-built records and ensure all documentation supports correct project billing.
- Follow all safety standards, complete required safety training, and use appropriate PPE in potentially hazardous conditions.
- Keep management informed of job progress, site conditions, and potential issues that may impact schedules or outcomes.
- Proactively manage processes and procedures, including email communication, collaboration tools, project folders, labor logs, and expense submissions.
- Perform sequence of operation verification on newly installed HVAC equipment and systems to confirm correct operation and performance compliance.
- Conduct point-to-point testing to verify electrical connections and ensure proper wiring and device functionality.
- Utilize building automation and controls tools and software to test, verify, and optimize system performance.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing sequence of operation verification (SOO) on newly installed HVAC equipment and systems to ensure correct operation and performance.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing point-to-point testing to verify electrical connections.
- Hands-on experience with installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, and programming building automation control systems.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, control devices, and building automation software.
- Proficiency in mechanical and electrical troubleshooting related to HVAC controls and building automation.
- Experience with DDC (direct digital controls) and related control strategies.
- Understanding of airflow and hydronic systems and their integration with control systems.
- Familiarity with IT networking concepts as they relate to building controls technologies.
- Ability to perform testing and verification of low-voltage controls and associated wiring.
- Competence in computer operations, including the use of Windows applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record that allows operation of a company vehicle.
- Strong communication skills to support customer interactions, team collaboration, and clear documentation.
- Ability to work independently in the field while managing time, tasks, and priorities effectively.
- Experience with building automation and controls technologies from major manufacturers such as Honeywell, Trane, and Siemens.
- Familiarity with Siemens platforms, including Siemens NX, or similar control platforms.
- Experience using analytics tools for building controls and system performance optimization.
- Comfort with using collaboration tools such as email platforms, online communication systems, project management tools, project folders, labor logs, and expense submission systems.
- Ability to lead or mentor newer technicians and support their development in controls and field practices.
- Strong attention to detail for reviewing mechanical plans, control submittals, and as-built documentation.
- Commitment to continuous learning through company training and self-directed development.
- Ability to conduct effective customer training sessions on completed HVAC control and building automation projects.
This role is primarily field-based and involves daily travel to local customer sites to perform installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and verification of HVAC control and building automation systems. The position may require working in extremely hot or cold weather conditions, as many tasks occur in mechanical rooms, rooftops, or other building environments. The technician may encounter noisy or potentially hazardous conditions and must use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with safety standards. Occasional overnight travel is required to support distant customer sites and to attend training at various manufacturers, typically lasting from two to five days. The work environment is dynamic and fast-paced, offering exposure to diverse projects and systems, with a strong emphasis on safety, collaboration, open communication with leadership, and ongoing professional development.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $63000.00 - $95000.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
