Job Title: Engineering Technician
Job Description
This Engineering Technician role focuses on supporting research and development activities for battery materials by processing powders, preparing battery electrodes, and assisting with lithium-ion cell fabrication. You will execute experiments under engineering direction, carefully document procedures and results, and help maintain an organized, safe, and efficient laboratory environment. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with cross-functional teams on cutting-edge projects in battery technology and materials development.
Responsibilities
- Process and prepare powders and battery electrodes for testing and development, ensuring consistent quality and adherence to specifications.
- Support lithium-ion cell fabrication and related laboratory activities, including material preparation, assembly, and basic testing.
- Execute experiments based on engineering direction, including design of experiments (DOE)-based work, and follow detailed experimental plans.
- Document material handling, test results, and procedures using standard operating procedures (SOPs) and travelers to maintain accurate and traceable records.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment used in materials processing and testing, performing basic troubleshooting and routine upkeep.
- Assist with sourcing, organizing, and tracking laboratory materials and cell components to ensure adequate inventory and smooth workflow.
- Communicate results, observations, and progress clearly to engineers and team members, contributing to technical discussions and project updates.
- Follow all laboratory safety protocols when working with powders, chemicals, and personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators and dry room procedures.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to support R&D projects and timelines, adapting to evolving priorities and project needs.
- Use MS Office tools such as Excel and Word to log data, generate reports, and maintain documentation in an organized and accessible format.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience in a laboratory or technical environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Hands-on R&D laboratory experience, with a focus on practical work rather than purely theoretical tasks.
- Experience in a battery or materials laboratory environment, including work with powders, chemicals, or electrodes.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and execute experiments accurately and consistently.
- Strong documentation skills, including the ability to record data and test results clearly and accurately.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word, for data entry, analysis, and reporting.
- Comfort working with personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators and dry room environments.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to stay organized in a laboratory setting.
- Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience handling powders, chemicals, or battery materials.
- Exposure to lithium-ion cells or electrode processing.
- Familiarity with DOE (design of experiments) concepts and execution.
- Interest in battery technology, materials development, or manufacturing.
- Ability to take initiative while executing experiments with some direction.
- Experience documenting work using travelers or similar process documentation tools.
- Background or familiarity with battery testing and electrode characterization.
Work Environment
This role is based in a research and development laboratory environment focused on battery materials and lithium-ion cell fabrication. You will work with powders, chemicals, electrodes, and related materials, often in controlled conditions such as dry rooms and areas requiring PPE, including respirators. The position involves regular use of laboratory equipment for materials processing and testing, as well as a computer for data entry, documentation, and communication; a computer will be provided during onboarding. The ramp-up period is approximately three weeks to reach full productivity, during which you will receive training on equipment, SOPs, and safety protocols. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and other technical staff in a structured, safety-conscious setting that values organization, clear communication, and adherence to laboratory procedures.
