Job Title: Compliance Certification Engineer
Job Description
The Compliance Certification Engineer supports product certification, regulatory submissions, and ongoing compliance documentation for consumer products. This role focuses primarily on coordinating certification efforts and managing documentation rather than performing extensive hands-on lab testing. You will work closely with internal engineering, quality, and design teams, as well as overseas manufacturing partners and external test laboratories, to ensure products meet all applicable safety and regulatory standards. This position is ideal for an organized engineer who enjoys documentation-heavy work, managing multiple projects in parallel, and communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, compile, and submit certification documentation to third-party agencies such as UL and ETL/Intertek.
- Manage registrations and submissions for regulatory and efficiency programs including EPA, HVI, and CARB.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date certification files, trackers, and internal compliance records for all relevant products.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and engineering change notices to determine certification impact and submission requirements.
- Coordinate closely with internal engineering, quality, and design teams to align product designs and changes with certification and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with overseas manufacturing partners and external test labs to support certification activities, documentation requests, and testing schedules.
- Support limited in-house or pre-compliance testing activities, including sample coordination, shipment, and basic test logistics as needed.
- Review test reports from external labs to verify results, confirm compliance, and identify any issues requiring follow-up or corrective action.
- Track invoices and other certification-related costs to ensure accurate documentation and timely processing.
- Drive and contribute to process improvements related to compliance workflows, documentation practices, and certification tracking.
- Manage multiple certification and registration projects in parallel, prioritizing tasks and deadlines to support timely product launches.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with both technical and non-technical stakeholders regarding certification status, requirements, and next steps.
- Ensure that all compliance and certification documentation is complete, accurate, and aligned with applicable UL, ETL, CSA, RoHS, and other relevant standards.
Essential Skills
- 1–3 years of experience in compliance engineering or compliance-related work, preferably supporting product certifications.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred, with a strong preference for Electrical Engineering.
- Experience with UL standards and UL certification processes.
- Experience with ETL/Intertek submissions and related certification workflows.
- Exposure to EPA registrations or similar regulatory program submissions.
- Ability to review and interpret bills of materials (BOMs), engineering drawings, specifications, and change notices for compliance impact.
- Familiarity with product safety or regulatory certifications in a manufacturing or consumer products environment.
- Strong organizational skills with proven ability to manage documentation-heavy processes and maintain detailed records.
- Effective project tracking skills and ability to manage multiple parallel certification efforts.
- Calm, professional communication style suitable for frequent interaction with internal teams, external labs, and manufacturing partners.
- Comfort working in a collaborative, cross-functional engineering and compliance environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Broader engineering experience with some compliance exposure is welcome, especially for motivated candidates looking to grow in compliance.
- Experience supporting Far East or China-based manufacturing or supplier teams is a plus.
- Familiarity with CSA standards and related certification requirements is beneficial.
- Exposure to pre-compliance testing activities and coordination of test samples is an advantage.
- Knowledge of RoHS requirements and documentation processes is a plus.
- Familiarity with AI tools such as Copilot or similar technologies is a plus for documentation and workflow efficiency.
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through in managing documentation, submissions, and certification timelines.
- Interest in building niche expertise in product compliance, certifications, and regulatory submissions.
- Motivation to grow into a visible role that directly impacts speed to market and ongoing product certifications.
Work Environment
This role is based in an office-focused engineering and compliance environment with occasional interaction around testing and sample coordination. The schedule typically includes four days onsite, Monday through Thursday, with limited remote or hybrid flexibility and potential, but not confirmed, flexibility on Fridays. You will work within a compliance team of approximately five people in a collaborative, documentation-driven, cross-functional, and detail-oriented culture. Travel is very rare, though occasional visits to external test labs such as Intertek’s Cortland office may occur. The work emphasizes coordination, documentation, regulatory submissions, and follow-through, with limited hands-on testing and lab-based activities.
