How can you stay valuable at your current job? What will help you progress your career?

The answer is upskilling.

In today’s ever-changing world, it’s essential to stay connected with the advanced skills required by a modern workplace. You need to evolve with the rapid advancement in technology and software because sluggish development might hold you back from progressing in the contemporary job market.

Understanding Skill Deficit

To understand upskilling, we first need to understand what skill deficit is and why a skill gap might be holding you back from moving forward. Skill deficit is simply the lack of knowledge on how to perform any given task, and it includes not only technical but human skills as well. For example, if a person is asked to drive a car and they can’t drive, it means that they have driving skill deficits. Even though the definition of skill deficit is simple, the deficit itself is a grave concern because it’s possibly one of the biggest reasons that are keeping you from getting the job you want, and it should be dealt with in order for you to progress.

Tackling Skill Deficit with Upskilling

Dealing with a skill deficit is simple and straightforward; you actively need to pursue new skills, which is called upskilling. Upskilling is essential, that’s why Amazon is investing $700M in its upskilling program upskilling 2025. It’s required not only to overcome skill deficit, but it helps you stay ahead of everyone. You can enroll in a program to upskill, or you can do it individually, the outcome will definitely help you move forward in your career. Upskilling at the most basic level requires you to keep up with the latest development at your workplace, including technologies, procedures, business methods, etc. Some benefits of upskilling are,

Expansion of Personal Network

The immediate effect of upskilling is the expansion of your personal network, as you come in contact with new people in the classrooms or workshops that you attend for upskilling yourself, which helps broaden your personal network.

Increase in Your Value

It’s simple math. The more advanced skillset you have, the more valuable you are. And more value means more salary, which means that you’ll be able to get the things you’ve always wanted.

Keeping Up with Demands and Trends

Upskilling helps you keep in touch with the advancement in software and technologies as it requires to stay on top of the tech used in the modern workplace.

First in Line for Promotion

Again, the more advanced skillset you possess, the higher your chances are to stay ahead of your competition, making you first in line for the promotion you deserve.

Wider Career Path

If you decide to change your career altogether, upskilling will broaden your course of a career and giving you the opportunity to get jobs in different fields.

In a Nutshell

While it is true that we learn on the job, continually upskilling is essential to keep yourself relevant to the market that’s why high achieving individuals are always upskilling to extend their career shelf life.

How can you stay valuable at your current job? What will help you progress your career? The answer is upskilling.

Acing the Modern Workplace by Upskilling

How can you stay valuable at your current job? What will help you progress your career? The answer is upskilling. In today’s ever-changing world, it’s essential to stay connected with the advanced skills required by a modern workplace.

Let’s suppose after the hectic process of researching potential employers and submitting your resume to a bunch of different companies, and you finally land yourself an interview. Do you know how to navigate yourself in that situation? Do you know how to present yourself? How to project confidence? If not, then say no more we got you covered with the basic do’s and don’ts of an interview.

Do’s

Research About the Job

You need to research beforehand about the job position you’re applying for; you need to know what the company does and what your responsibilities will be after you get hired.

Dress Appropriately

To choose your dress for the interview, research the company on different social media platforms, and learn about their workplace culture and clothing accordingly. Remember it’s always a good idea to go more formal than required. Personal hygiene and grooming are of paramount importance; you don’t want to come off as a slacker.

Be Punctual

The first impression you make is extremely important, that’s why it is vital that you arrive on time, in fact, the best thing to do is being ten minutes early which will give you time to freshen up and clear your head.

Project Confidence

Once you get in the interview room, offer a firm handshake, make eye contact, and be friendly. And when you’re seated, sit up straight and lean a bit forward. Use the right amount of hand gestures while speaking; this avoids you from hiding your hands and makes your palms visible which means that you’re honest and engaging. Nod your head while listening to the interviewer. Be relaxed, as the interview is designed to see what makes you rattle, and if you rattle easily, that will come off as you can’t handle the pressure.

Converse

You’re giving an interview instead of giving or listening to a ted talk or performing a standup comedy session that’s why it’s essential that you carry the conversation. It should go back and forth like a sweet round of tennis. Let the interviewer ask the questions they want to be answered because their job is to assess if you’re the right candidate for the job, and if you need time to answer a certain question, just ask if you can think for a second before you answer.

Ask Relevant Questions

Asking relevant questions that you didn’t find in your research is essential as it shows that you’re interested in the job and not just phoning it in.

Don’ts

Lie or Trash talk

You might be tempted to lie or trash talk about past employers or about your last job to land the job you’re interviewing for, avoid it at any cost as it will not win you any points. Instead, it will make you seem petty or a risky hire. Avoid lying on your resume about skills, you don’t want to look like a fool once you’re given a job you lied about as you might end up getting fired and have to redo the whole process again.

Act Desperate

Being unemployed is hard, especially if you’ve been unemployed for a long time as you might be in debt. That’s why it mustn’t seem like you’re doing the job just for the salary and have no interest in the job.

Act Aloof

Don’t be late for the interview, don’t slouch or sit in a negative posture, don’t chew gum, keep your phone on silent mode and avoid using it during the meeting.

The Bottom Line

Job hunting is hard, but knowing the basic interview etiquette will help you get the job you want.

Good Luck!

Mannerism for Job Interviews

Let’s suppose after the hectic process of researching potential employers and submitting your resume to a bunch of different companies, and you finally land yourself an interview. Do you know how to navigate yourself in that situation? Do you know how to present yourself? How to project confidence?

Mannerisms for Job Interviews

When it comes to searching for a job, I constantly hear words like scary, nerve-racking, frustrating, and deflating when I ask someone how their search is going. The truth is, job searching canbe all of these things, but it doesn’t have to be. The key to having a more pleasant and beneficial job search experience is understanding how to “control the controllables”!

While you are looking for a job, there are certain things that are within your control and others that’s fall outside of your power. Factors such as the job market or the amount of currently open opportunities in your local area might be things that you are not able to control. However, there are other factors that you do have control over! Let’s dive into the 3 areas that you have complete control over when you are looking for a new job.

Personal Brand:

There is nothing that we have more control over than our personal brand and how we present ourselves to the outside world. Whether we are talking about your resume, your LinkedIn page, or how your present yourself in an interview, these are all factors that you have the power to make as strong, or as weak, as you want. Everyone has heard the cliché, “you never get a second chance at a first impression,” and that relates directly back to your personal branding. How are you presenting yourself on social media? How does your resume reflect your professional persona? How are you communicating with recruiters and hiring managers? If you were on the other side of the interview table or computer, would you hire you? These are all questions that you need to honestly ask yourself and determine if there are areas of improvement.

Networking:

Networking is a crucial factor in a job search and it is something that every person can do to help themselves. Whether you have 5-10 years of experience, or zero experience at all, you can always network and build connections. Reaching out to past co-workers or managers, or professors and friends is a great way to start your networking process. It might feel awkward or uncomfortable at the beginning, but I can guarantee that these past relationships will help in your job search.

Oftentimes, I have people tell me that they feel slimy or rude when I suggest that they reach out to past co-workers or friends to see if they can help in their job search. But once I explain that people love to help other people, the mindset changes. Put yourself on the other side of the conversation…pretend that an old co-worker, who you enjoyed working with, reached out to you and explained that he/she was out of a job. Would you want to help them? Would you be willing to give them some perspective or suggestions about who might be good to talk to? Nine times out of ten, I would bet that you would want to help your old co-worker find a job! So, don’t hesitate to reach out to those people who you have/had relationships with. The worst they can say is “sorry buddy, I can’t help you,” but nothing is lost from reaching out! Silence the voices in your head saying, “they don’t care” or “they won’t be any help,” and just reach out! I promise that you will get a lot further in your job search!

Upskilling:

When you are out of a job for more than a couple months, “upskilling” can be a great thing for you to do in your spare time. “Upskilling” means taking a course or training and helping to advance your skills in the area that you want to grow into. Many people say, “but that costs money, and I am out of a job so I can’t spend money on more training,” but the truth is, CareerCircle provides discounted trainings for you and the couple-hundred dollars that you spend on a course to advance your career is 100% worth it. Think about it from a hiring managers perspective. If you go into an interview after being out of work for 6 months and the hiring manager asks you what you have been doing for the past 6 months while you have been job search, do you think that the hiring manager will be more impressed with hearing that you have taken a course in the specific skills you are interviewing for, or do you think he/she wants to hear that you haven’t been expanding your skills? That’s an easy one, right? Every Hiring Manager loves to see candidates taking initiative and investing in their own knowledge. It shows that you are eager to learn and committed to growing your career! Do yourself a favor and invest a small amount of money in “upskilling,” I can promise you that the short term sacrifice will lead to long term gain!

So, if you are reading this post and feeling a little discouraged about your current job search, I challenge you to reflect on whether you are “controlling the controllables,” and if not, let’s make the change and turn your job search experience around! You got this!
